OAKLAND — BART’s board of directors has elected a new president and vice president, the transit agency announced Thursday. Lateefah Simon, who has represented BART’s District 7 since 2017, will be the agency’s new president, replacing Bevan Duffy. Mark Foley, the District 2 representative since 2018, will be the vice-president, replacing Rebecca Saltzman.

In a statement, Simon said she will emphasize giving the Bay Area a “world class public transit system” that is accessible to more of the region.

“I am deeply dedicated to improving service and developing partnerships with local governments and elected officials to provide a holistic approach to the quality-of-life issues playing out throughout the Bay Area and impacting the BART system and our riders,” she wrote.

Foley said in the same statement that BART must “regain the trust of weekend and night riders.”

“We’re making progress, but we’ve got a ways to go,” he said. “I’m going to do my best to make sure we get there.”
